On Sept. 30, 2006 Christan Rainey’s life was forever changed when his month and 4 siblings were murdered in a domestic violence incident. Out of that tragedy, he formed MAD USA, Inc., a non-profit to assist victims of domestic violence and educating people, particularly men, about domestic violence. The organization’s 8th annual Domestic Violence Awareness Event will take place at the Sam’s Club in North Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 5. Rainey provided all of the information for the event, including who the event is for, and how it will assist the community. He also shared some tips for both victims, and steps you can take if you believe someone is begin affect by domestic violence.

One in eight women are affected by cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this year the American Cancer Society is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Charleston Making Strides event. This year’s event is in a new location, at John’s Island County Park on Saturday, Oct. 26. Tricia Bantz with the American Cancer Society describes the event, explains what “Making Strides” is about, and how people can join the free event. Additionally, Bantz talked about where the money that the event raises will go, and some of the many services the American Cancer Society provides in the Lowcountry.
