LOWCOUNTRY FOREVER – August 2, 2026
GUEST: Sara Green, Executive Director of the SC Wildlife Federation
ISSUE: Environment
Is there a drinking water problem in the Lowcountry? According to the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, there could be in the future. The organization’s executive director Sara Green says it’s because of a 2023 Supreme Court ruling surrounding the Clean Water Act. Green provided an explanation of what the Clear Water Act is and what the ruling changed and how now some streams are no longer protected and the effect that may have in this area. Citing an EPA analysis that suggests 74 percent, or 2.3 million acres, of South Carolina’s freshwater wetlands may no longer be protected, Green shared what individuals could do to make a difference. She also provided context on why this affects the Wildlife Federation, while also talking about what the Federation does overall in South Carolina.
