Every July, Gullah Geechee culture is celebrated as part of the town of Mount Pleasant’s annual Sweetgrass Festival. Michael Allen was a part of the formation of the event is 2004 and is an organizer for this year’s July 25th event. Allen is a historian and Gullah Geechee expert who provided an explanation for what the culture is and some history on the culture here in the Lowcountry. Sweetgrass baskets are a key part of the festival and Allen shared the importance of the craft and the impact it has on our area both economically and for from a heritage standpoint. In addition to breaking down the individual events making up the Festival, Allen also shared the groups and organizations who make the event possible as well as the positive impact of the event on our community.
