Lowcountry Forever – It’s Cool to Be in School – July 19, 2026

LOWCOUNTRY FOREVER – July 19, 2026
GUEST: Chef Edwin Wright, Ombudsman; Whitney Lawrence, Senior Administrative Assistant with the NCPD; and Jessie Demalo, NCPD Officer.
ISSUE: Back to School
While Summer is coming to an end and kids are gearing up to go back to school, many kids find themselves unprepared to go headstrong into the school year. Since 2008, the North Charleston Police Department has been hosting the It’s Cool to Be in School back-to-school bash where police officers give away free school supplies, backpacks, haircuts and more. Officer Demalo emphasized that this year’s event, happening August 1st at the North Charleston Sports Complex, is free for kids all the way through high school, designed to help parents as well with providing school supplies amid the rising prices. Chef Edwin Wright also explained the history of the event and how much of an impact it’s made on the children of North Charleston, significantly decreasing the number of children often missing school because they were unprepared, and how it continues to help the community nearly 20 years later.
